Julian Rowlands is a bandoneonist, multi-instrumental performer of world and classical music and a composer.
After becoming involved with tango music, the fascinating sound and unique expressive possibilities of the bandoneon led him to focus exclusively on the instrument, studying for a number of years with the leading Argentinean player Victor Villena.
He has performed throughout the country at venues including The Lowry, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Perth Concert Hall, Sage Gateshead, Hull New Theatre, Lakeside Nottingham, Colston Hall and St. George's Bristol. As well as touring with Tango Siempre in their music and dance shows and milonga performances, he has performed live on BBC Radio 3's "In Tune" with bass-baritone Erwin Schrott, and on BBC1 television's "The One Show", and appeared as a soloist with the Bristol Ensemble chamber orchestra. He will be appearing with the soloists of the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Wigmore Hall in December 2010 in Piazzolla's 'Five Tango Sensations'. He also plays with La Portatil and is principal bandoneonist of the London Tango Orchestra, and plays in duos with classical guitarist Adam Khan and pianist Ivo de Greef, gives solo recitals, and does recording sessions for commercial music, film and television.
